ICC Champions Trophy 2006

The ICC Champions Trophy World Cup 2006 is an eagerly awaited event for cricket fans around the globe, for the world's best cricketing teams will compete against each other for this coveted trophy. The ICC Champions Trophy will be held in India from 7 October to 5 November 2006.

The Venues for The ICC Champions Trophy 2006 are Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mohali (Chandigarh) and Mumbai

The ICC Champions Trophy event ranks second in importance to the Cricket World Cup. Also known as the Mini-World Cup, the ICC Champions Trophy is played every two years between the world's top cricketing nations. The defending champions are the West Indies, who won the last tournament in 2004.

The ICC Champions Trophy was instituted to encourage emerging cricketing nations, who will play each other in the first round of the tournament. The ICC has announced the playing format, which is as follows.

The first round will be played by the teams ranked 7th - 10th in the ICC World Rankings as on 1st April 2006.

First Round

Zimbabwe              (9th)
Bangladesh           (10th)


The contest will be held in a Round Robin format. The top 2 teams will join the top 6 teams according to the IIC Rankings as on April 1, and the teams will play each other in two groups in the second round, as follows.

Group A             Group B
Australia (1st)           South Africa (2nd)
India (3rd)                 Pakistan (4th)
England (6th)            New Zealand (5th)
Qualifier 2                 Qualifier 1

The teams in each group will play each other in a Round Robin format.

Semi Finals and Finals
The top two teams from each group will make it to the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-final matches will compete for the ICC Champions Trophy, in the final, on 5th November 2006.

The full tournament schedule will be announced later this month.
