Lucknow the city of Nawabs has preserved the remains of some of the grand monuments in the colonial era. The most famous monuments are British Residency, though now in ruins, yet has its legend to tell. Three thousand British men, women and children escaped from their homes to take refuge in this building in redbricks during the revolt of 1857. Now it has been converted into government offices and museum. Within the complex there are the graves of the soldiers who were killed during the war. The other sites to be visited are Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara and Mughal Governor Safdarjung's Macchi Bhawan (Fish Palace).
