In the year 1960, when old Bombay state was divided between Maharashtra and Gujarat, the city of Mumbai went into Maharashtra. It was then decided that a new capital should be established for the state of Gujarat. A new city planned with inspiration from the design of Chandigarh was the established with the name Gandhinagar, after the name of Mahatma Gandhi. Built on the west banks of the Sabarmati River, the city of Gandhinagar is located at a distance of 32 kms from Ahmedabad. Gandhinagar is known to be the second planned city after Chandigarh in Independent India.
Gandhinagar city is mainly known for the famous temple of Swaminarayan, popularly known as Akshardham. This temple is said to be constructed out of nearly 6000 tonnes of pink sandstone brought from Rajasthan. The temple with domed roofs raised on 100 profusely carved pillars has its interiors furnished with Karnataka rosewood and the statutes of Swaminarayan and two other prominent gurus in gold leaf coating.
